Have an EXTRA copy of the animal’s vet record, including rabies certificate to present to the family. Keep a copy for yourself in case the animal is returned. So you have an animal that needs a good home, and the rescues and shelters are unable to help you?
Ask if you can call their veterinarian to ask about vet history and always do a home check for a potential pet adopter. Check newspapers regularly and let people know what could happen to their pet and tell them how to prevent this avoidable situation. If your own pet has unwanted puppies or kittens, this isn’t the mother’s fault, it is your fault. Spay mom and if possible neuter dad to prevent anymore unwanted litters. PETA has asked Craigslist to implement a policy prohibiting “free to a good home” ads, but thus far the company has done nothing beyond posting a mild warning about giving away animals on its site. Please click here to urge Craigslist to ban these ads immediately.
Cruelty
Remember pets are for life, and you permitted your animal to have puppies and kittens by not spaying, and by not keeping them indoors/supervised. However, if you are going to do this, I feel it needs to be done correctly. Paying a fee for a pet shows good faith on the part of the new owner and demonstrates their willingness to properly care for the animal. The truth is, there is no such thing as a “free” pet anyway. By the time a cat or dog is checked out by a vet, including shots, worming, health testing, and spay/neuter, a “free” pet will easily cost in excess of $100, and that’s just for starters. Talk to local animal rescues and ask if you can bring the animal to one of their adoption fairs.

Although Craigslist prohibits the sale of animals on its site, it still allows animals to be given away for free or via a small “re-homing” fee. When you are considering re-homing your pet please consider whether or not you absolutely need to do so. Upon adopting a pet, you take on the responsibility to provide that animal with love and to see to his or her needs for life.
Ads in Craigslist’s “pets” section are a magnet for animal abusers, as these cases illustrate:
The pet will not be cared for properly and is often allowed to roam the streets. After one week or two call the family back, and see how the animal is doing. This will also put your mind at ease, and let the family know you still have the animal’s best interest in mind.

Finding a home for an animal can be both emotional and time-consuming. If a potential adopter refuses to let you see where the pet would live or refuses to give you their vet name, run. Are there outer buildings that look like they may have housed breeding animals at one time? You don’t have to require a meticulous home that would pass a white glove test, but you want to make sure the home is safe and that your pet will be treated like part of the family.

Please read our report on Puppy Mills for the horrors of pets that meet this fate. In March of 2011, Jeffrey Nally, Jr., a 19-year-old West Virginia man, was arrested for torturing and killing 29 puppies he obtained from “free” classified ads. According to reports, Nally killed the puppies using hammers, drills, saws, crossbows, and guns. Some of the dogs were skinned or otherwise mutilated.
If you go through a regular vet it is expensive, especially if you give the vet the permission to give a full work up such as the kitten shots and so forth. You have found the perfect home for your fostered animal. Do place ads in the newspapers, on bulletin boards, etc..

Veterinary care may be denied since they may figure they’ll just “get another one” if this one dies. As rescuers, we’ve heard horror stories of pets that were adopted by “caring” families, only to be chained outside and forgotten. I’d also find out if other people in the house want another pet.If they don’t, I probably wouldn’t let them adopt my pet. Because it’s likely your animal would get harmed, given away or taken to a shelter after a short time.

For your pet’s sake, please don’t forego the important screening procedures outlines above. Puppy mills and backyard breeders scour free ads for animals they cause use to produce puppies . If your pet is a purebred, potential adopters may be interested in using it breeding purposes, either as part of a puppy mill operation or as a backyard breeder.
Once you hand an animal over, the situation is out of your control, and there’s no way for you to know what may happen. These cases are proof that no matter how desperate you are, you should never resort to giving away an animal to someone you don’t know and trust. This website is using a security service to protect itself from online attacks. The action you just performed triggered the security solution.

They put on a good front and have a wonderful story about how they are all animal lovers and are looking for a new addition to the family. They will tell you whatever they think you want to hear. Cold hearted people will skim the Internet looking for free dogs, typically smaller breeds, to use as bait dogs to train their dog fighting dogs, or to train free dogs, like pit bulls, to become fighters. Dogs used to fight are neglected, beaten and often starved to make fighting dogs more aggressive, bait dogs weaker and broken. So now you have put much time, money, effort, and love into the animal, and you are going to give him/her to a total stranger? You can speak to them over the phone, or make a home visit.
This simply entails calling their veterinarian and asking if their pets are all current on vaccinations and are spayed or neutered. If they are, that’s a good indication they will take proper care of your pet. These people collect animals from freebie ads to resell for profit in flea markets and online ads.
